In this Sunday’s Front Nine, I’m focusing on the US Open. Part two of my driver fitting saga will run in Thursday’s Back Nine. If you enjoy this post, subscribe for free.
Winged Foot played like a US Open yesterday. After two aces and a bundle of low scores on Thursday, the USGA went to work leaving just three players under par heading into the final round.
Matthew Wolff posted a ridiculous 65 despite hitting only two fairways. He’s twenty-one. It’s his second major. He finished fourth in his first at the PGA Championship. It’s got to be that twerk.
Patrick Reed found his weekend hacker swing on the back nine vomiting up a 43 despite mixing in some questionable etiquette.
Hideki Matsuyama was cruising through Winged Foot like that Lexus NBC keeps advertising. Then he turned into a rusty Corolla on 18 with a double-bogey.
Bryson DeChambeau got compared to a silverback gorilla on his way to posting even par.
Rory Mcllroy shot his second sub-par round with a 68. He’s lurking at +1 and is my pick to win it. Christ, he’s a handsome lad!
Tiger and Phil both missed the cut of a major for the first time in twenty-one years. It’s official, my childhood is over. Tiger Tracker said it best: “This week absolutely blows.” Watching Tiger and Phil hack it around Winged Foot made me feel like…

@thelocalist did a tremendous breakdown proving that Byson DeChambeau did, in fact, eat a Smuckers Uncrustable on the back nine of the US Open’s third round. The announcers insist on expressing shock at Bryson’s strength, thus leaving no room for such important analyses. By hole 7, I was feeling like Phil listening to these guys.
And for the zero of us who wonder how Bryson winds down in the evening, there are no surprises: hitting drives, eating steak, playing fortnite.
Can NBC please permanently hand the mic over to Nick Faldo, who consistently offers thoughtful commentary with a touch of humor - in an English accent! There’s no doubt he would have probed the Uncrustable. Just look at him breakdown US Open catering. I hope the members forking over the $200,000 initiation fee get something better than a “Boston doughnut”.
In related news, Nick Faldo may have passed Phil Mickelson on the Best Twitter Feed Amongst Golfers list. Here are some gems from the week:
Nick showing off his investigative journalism skills at 7:00AM Sunday morning. Winged Foot groundskeepers are turning the five-inch rough into a soaking rat’s nest.

The answer is: all of them.
See you on the back nine on Thursday.
